IPL Laser Treatment Q & A

What is intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, also called photorejuvenation, is a treatment that uses various wavelengths of light to improve the signs of aging and diminish skin blemishes.

This technology can treat blemishes such as:

  • Freckles
  • Age or sun spots
  • Birthmarks
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Unwanted hair
  • Rosacea

IPL differs slightly from laser treatments, in that it uses multiple, diffused light waves, rather than one concentrated light beam. This allows for a gentle, noninvasive approach to treatment that penetrates into deeper layers of skin without damaging the surface of the skin.

How does IPL work?

IPL uses light waves to create a therapeutic degree of heat. This heat destroys pigments, capillaries, or hair follicles that are the underlying cause for your blemishes.

The body naturally eliminates the destroyed tissues from the body over time. As the skin heals, it establishes new, stronger, and firmer tissue that improves the overall quality of the skin in the treatment area.

IPL can be used anywhere on the body, but is most commonly used on the face, neck, and chest.

What preparations are needed for IPL?

Before your treatment, you need to help your skin be as healthy as possible. It’s important that for about two weeks before your treatment, you:

  • Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds
  • Avoid use of skin creams that contain vitamin A or glycolic acid
  • Avoid taking meds the increase your bleeding risk, like aspirin or ibuprofen
  • Avoid other skin treatments, such as chemical peels or dermal fillers
  • Wear sunscreen daily

When your skin is healthy ahead of time, your treatment will be more effective.

What does an IPL treatment entail?

On the day of your treatment, your provider applies both a numbing cream and a cooling cream. You’re given a pair of glasses to protect your eyes during your treatment.

A glass-tipped wand is used to deliver the IPL therapy. Your treatment should take about 30-40 minutes, and afterward, you’ll have no downtime or recovery period.

After your session, you may have some redness or tenderness, which should resolve within a few hours. For best results, you will likely need 2-6 treatments at about 3-4 week intervals. Your specific treatment plan depends on your specific skin concerns. Results are long-lasting, but may need yearly maintenance for your best look.
